Little Village statement on Liz Truss’s energy plan: Government plans too little, too late for families in poverty

Sophie Livingstone, CEO of Little Village said:

“It is a relief to know that energy bills won’t rise further this autumn, but this is too little too late for the families we see here at Little Village. Our baby banks provide essentials to families unable to afford the essential items they need for their babies and children. Many tell us they are able to afford to heat their homes and put food on the table, let alone provide the essentials they need for their children.

“In recent weeks we’ve met families forced to ration nappies, babies sleeping on floors because the price of a cot is too high and parents forgoing meals for the sake of their children.

“We are deeply concerned that children trapped in poverty will suffer untold hardships this autumn and winter. We support calls from charities including Save the Children to raise child benefits by £10 a week and for the existing cost of living support to double.”
