As communities across the UK prepare to come together for the A Million Acts of Hope campaign, Little Village baby banks are calling on local people to get involved and help support families with babies and young children across London.

\n

The national week of action (13–20 May) aims to counter rising division and negativity by celebrating the everyday acts of kindness that strengthen communities. From supporting baby banks, food banks, community centres or running local groups, these “acts of hope” highlight the power of people coming together to make a difference.

\n

For Little Village, volunteers are at the heart of that mission. Every week, volunteers give their time to sort, pack and distribute essential items – from clothing and nappies to toys and equipment – ensuring children have the basics they need.

\n

In the past year alone, Little Village has seen demand for its services rise sharply, supporting babies and children more times than ever before. Behind every bundle of essentials is a volunteer helping to make that support possible.

\n

Calleigh-Marie Lawrence, Director of Volunteering, said: “Volunteers are so critical to our baby banks. They are the people who turn generosity into action – sorting donations, packing bundles with care, and helping families feel seen and supported. At a time when many families are facing real hardship, and when our communities can feel increasingly divided, volunteering is a powerful way to show up for one another. Through campaigns like A Million Acts of Hope, we’re reminded that small, everyday actions can have a profound impact.”

Volunteering at Little Village is constantly evolving, with growing demand for flexible and one off opportunities alongside strong ongoing commitment, enabling over 3,100 volunteer contributions and expanding access for people to support families in ways that fit their lives.

Emily, one of our volunteers at our Tooting baby bank said: “It’s given me such a rewarding feeling volunteering at Little Village. Seeing all the families with smiles on their faces and just knowing that there is positive impact happening in the community.”

Nina, who volunteers at our Brent baby bank said: “Volunteering at Little Village opens your eyes and broadens your understanding of the challenges others face, and reminds you how much kindness exists when people come together. The most rewarding part is seeing the relief, the smiles, and the joy on parents’ faces when they leave with essentials they truly need. It’s incredibly moving to know that donated items – things that once belonged to someone else – are now helping a family feel supported, seen, and less alone.”
