'Wiped Out' - our shelves are empty of newborn nappies and wipes

Right now, our baby banks across London have run out of newborn nappies and baby wipes – essentials no parent should have to go without. We’re urgently appealing for donations to help us restock and continue supporting families who are struggling more than ever.

Demand for essential baby items is soaring. Each week, more families are being pushed into poverty, and the pressure on our services is growing. Already in the first half of 2025, we’ve distributed 4,549 packs of nappies – that’s a 64% increase compared to the same time last year. In 2024, we gave out over 6,500 packs, and the need just keeps rising.

We’re seeing the real impact of this crisis. Our data shows that over a quarter (26%) of parents are rationing nappies to make each pack last longer. A newborn typically needs around 10 nappies a day – that’s about three packs a week. At current mid-range prices, families are spending up to £48 a month just on nappies alone.

“Right now, our shelves are empty of newborn nappies and wipes. It’s heartbreaking because it means tomorrow a parent may have to choose between buying food or keeping their baby clean and dry. No family should face that kind of impossible decision. Nappies are not a luxury; they are a necessity. But without urgent support, too many babies will go without the comfort they deserve.”

Renata Acioli, one of our baby bank managers, adds:

“I meet families every day who are doing everything they can, but still don’t have enough to cover even the most basic essentials. It’s devastating to hear about parents having to ration nappies or formula. You can help. If you’re able to, please buy an extra pack and ‘keep one, pass one on’.”

Thanks to your support, we’ve also been able to expand our emergency newborn packs into every NHS maternity unit in London. These kits include nappies, sleepsuits, baby grows, muslins, and maternity pads – ensuring that no parent welcomes their baby without the basics. This year, we’ll distribute over 700 packs, a 37% increase from 2024.
